I was very pleased when I received this box set. Firstly, I was please that Seasons 1 & 2 originally filmed and broadcast in Black & White were presented here on this set in glorious Black & White. So very clear. And Seasons 3 through 9 in glorious color, also very clear video and audio.Episodes are uncut and complete. I remember seeing them on TV a few years ago and they were cut mercilessly , usually with the end tag scene cut completely. But…. Not in this set. It’s nice seeing the complete episodes. One of the more pleasant surprises was the omission in some episodes in this set of the laugh track. I’m sure it was an accident in the transfer (I know that in foreign copies there is no laugh track at all) but watching some episodes (Like the Ben Franklin episode in Season 3) without the laugh track was quite refreshing. Refreshing in that I could laugh where I wanted because of the excellent writing instead of being “prompted” to laugh by those who insert the laugh track. It’s too bad that there is not an option to turn off the laugh track on all episodes.I found that the earlier seasons (1-5) were the best and most original. The latter seasons (6-9) started to get very repetitious and fell into almost the same pattern: Darrin says/does something to annoy Endora; Endora places a spell on Darrin; Darrin spends rest of episode having the spell on him cause all sorts of problems; Samantha convinces Endora to remove spell; all ends happily.Whereas, the early seasons had lots of originality. Like introducing the smarmy Private Investigator, Charlie Leach. He saw Samantha perform her witchcraft and tried to blackmail her. She gave him “what for” to teach him a lesson WITH the blessing of Darrin. Or the two-part episode where Endora and Uncle Arthur squabble and Endora keeps zapping a house on and off of an empty lot. The second part has Endora throwing a Halloween party at the Steven’s house and for one of the few times, Darrin actually enjoys the party! It’s nice in the early seasons that there is a nice mix of different styles of story keeping the series fresh. No formulaic writing. And the special effects are quite good for the time. Without digital effects, the effects in the episodes are great. You can’t see the strings or how things were done, even on a 4K TV.If you are a fan of this show, or have never seen it, this is a great purchase. My only minor complaint is that the sleeves for the DVD are cardboard so being gentle removing and reinserting them is prudent to keep the discs from scratching.
